Nathan's I.T., Exchange & Other ramblings!
I am intending this blog to be mostly about technology matters based around Microsoft OSes. It will deal with projects I am working on and will have a bias towards Exchange server.

Ever get Userenv 1054 errors!
If you find that you are getting a load of userenv 1054 errors here is a possible solution.
It is likely that the machine is running over a relatively slow link and the slow link GPO policy is preventing download of GPOs.
Therefore you must edit the registry and enter a value to define slow links.
I have set and entry of 10000 in decimal.
See the link below for more details:

Problem with updates not installing WSUS.
If you are having problems with certain PCs not being able to install updates downloaded from WSUS or windows update try the process in the link below:
Basically stoping the Auto updates service, deleting the softwaredistribution folder from the Windows directory and restarting the service.

Send as permissions for Exchange
When setting up send as permissions for a user on Exchange recently I had some problems.
Even though I followed the article KB327000 (Link) it wouldn't work.
I kept getting bounce back messages stating a permissions problem.
I then remembered something I read whilst setting up Exmerge permissions that about using groups for permissions.
I setup a new global group and added the user and then the send as works fine.
Strange! I am sure it usually works just with users on the ACE but still maybe this will work for someone else also.

Quick SBS 2003 restore tip!
Hi everyone,
Just a quick note;
When building a new SBS 2003 server, remember that disk quotas are enabled by default.
Otherwise, when you do a restore from tape you will find that part way through you are told there is not enough disk space left!
Obviously it is the quotas kicking in. Diasable them and the restore will continue!

How to migrate the content and approval from one WSUS server to another.
Hi,
Today I had to setup a WSUS server where there was no Internet connectivity.
So, how do you get the updates!
Well, luckily, I have a WSUS server at home already full of updates. To move them to the new WSUS server, I did the following:
- Copy the contents of the "WsusContent" directory to removable drive.
- Export the approvals database by using: "%ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Tools\wsusutil export c:\export.cab c:\exportlog.txt
- I then copied the export.cab file and the WSUSContect directory to the new server.
- Once WSUS was installed on the new server, I setup the language, approval and sync settings to be the same as the source server.
- I then ran; "%ProgramFiles%\Update Services\Tools\wsusutil import c:\export.cab c:\exportlog.txt
The last part can take a while as it imports all the info into the database.
At that point you should have a WSUS server complete with approved updates and no Internet connection!
PS. Here is a link to the WSUS deployment guide: Link
Testing POP3 access using Telnet
Hi,
I was putting in a new SBS install today and wanted to test access to the global POP3 mailbox before entering credentials onto the server.
To test this, I did the following:
Open CMD prompt
Type: telnet host.domain.xxx 110
Type: user username
Type: pass password
At this point, you should be logged onto your server.
Now you can use the following commands:
List: Lists the contents of the mailbox with the mail ID
Retr ID: Allows to you view mail on screen
Dele ID: Lets you delete mail
Rset: Undoes any changes
Stat: Shows size of mailbox and no. of items
Quit: Closes the connection
Hope this is useful to people.
Cheers
Nathan
